Every Friday, Root & Rebound runs a free Reentry Legal Hotline (at phone # 510-279-4662) for anyone in California to ask our legal team questions about the impact of a criminal record across all areas of lifefamily law, employment, housing, obtaining ID and drivers licenses, court debt, public benefits, education, tribal law, immigration & more.

This hotline is free & open to anyone with a record, including people who are currently incarcerated (we accept collect calls), as well as to family members with a loved one in reentry and service providers supporting people with records.

LARRP Employment Committee is proud to present it’s “Annual Reentry Workforce Training for Workforce Professionals” once again at the Vernon-Central WorkSource Center (operated by Coalition for Responsible Community) located on the LA Trade Tech Campus (LATTC).

The first half of the program, Root & Rebound will present on the LA City Fair Chance Initiative, CA’s Ban the Box, and understanding criminal background checks. The second half of the program will consist of a panel of reentry employment experts from Chrysalis, Center for Living and Learning, Rio Hondo America’s Job Center of California and Friends Outside, Los Angeles. The panel will provide best practices for applicants, job developers and for speaking with employers. It’s not enough to know the laws. Come join us and join the conversation on how to best assist those with convictions to gain employment!

ABOUT ACCESS TO JUSTICE DAYS:
On Wednesday, November 7th, R&R will be hosting our 2nd ACCESS TO JUSTICE DAY at our downtown Oakland office for people with arrest and conviction records. Between 3-6 p.m., you can stop by and meet one-on-one with a member of R&R’s legal staff, and ask us reentry-related legal questions or other questions about how your record may impact your life & rights. You can also receive free resources like our Reentry Planning Toolkit and “My Education, My Freedom” Toolkit.

Our legal team is constantly looking for more ways to connect, which is why we have launched bi-monthly Access to Justice Days in our Oakland Office to provide legal support and advice to people with records. Sign up for a free appointment today!

Examples of questions we can help provide legal advice on include: Parole and probation restrictions; visiting and reunifying with family members; cleaning up your record; learning about your employment and housing rights; occupational license issues; reinstating a Driver’s License; getting basic forms of ID; immigration rights; and voting rights.

Join Root & Rebound for a training on Fair Chance Hiring & Employment Best Practices in Fresno on November 9th. Learn about new laws impacting how and when employers can consider job applicants’ conviction records, best practices in HR processes, and the benefits of employing people with records.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The Fair Chance Hiring training is ideal for local employers and workforce development professionals, as well as service providers and attorneys who support people with criminal records. We invite anyone looking to learn about Ban the Box law – also known as CA’s Fair Chance Act – and best practices for hiring people with records to attend.

FAIR CHANCE EMPLOYERS’ TOOLKIT: As part of this workshop, you can take home Root & Rebound’s California Employers’ Fair Chance Hiring Toolkit — a critical resource for employers, H.R. departments, corporate counsel, and business professionals on hiring people with records. The toolkit lays out the content in an easy-to-digest format, with checklists and action steps, as well as best practices for fair chance hiring to ensure employers can easily understand the critical information they need to make informed and responsible decisions. Topics include: legal compliance and minimizing risks; choosing a reliable background check company; the rewards of hiring Fair Chance workers, and best practices for on-boarding and training. It includes how to be in compliance with the Fair Chance Act of 2018.

WHO CAN ATTEND: Anyone with a record. You can live in any county to attend.

ABOUT THE CLINIC: Join organizations Root & Rebound, OneJustice, the Fresno Public Defender’s office, and Central California Legal Services for a FREE legal clinic for people with arrest or conviction records. At the clinic, you can meet 1-on-1 with a lawyer who has expertise about how an arrest or conviction record impacts your legal rights!  We will also be providing record-cleaning services and legal information about navigating barriers because of your record related to employment, housing, public benefits, family & children, immigration, parole & probation, and more!

At this clinic, our lawyers can answer questions about criminal records such as:

  • “Can I expunge my record?”
  • “Can I change how much child support I owe?”
  • “Can I get my felony changed to a misdemeanor?”
  • “Can I challenge my parole or probation conditions?”
  • “Can I get an occupational license if I have a record?”
  • “When can an employer ask me about my record?”
  • “Can I get visitation rights with my children?”
  • “Can a landlord run a background check on me?“
